Your Name (Writing Assignment #3)
The blog topic for this week is your name. Consider these questions to discuss: Who named you (in other words, who gave you your name) and are you named after/for somebody (ie., I am named after my grandfather whose name also began with H)? What does your name mean? Do you like your name or would you like to change it? Do you have a nickname? If so, who gave it to you? Are names important in your culture? Write about anything else you want to tell us about your name or the importance of names in your culture.

My Chinese name is 徐捷(Xu Jie). Xu is my family name and Jie is my giving name. One of my father's friend named me who is very famous. But I don't know him and he is in heaven now. In Chinese, Xu means slow and Jie is mean very fast. My father wants me just in the middle level of people's life. Because if u in the high level, u will be very tired. And if u in the low level, others will discriminate. So he thinks the better level is in the middle. I don’t like this name very much because it like boy’s name. Also many people use this name. But I won’t change this name forever because my family gave me. My nickname in my family is MaoMao. But it is only for my family. Most of people in Houston call me Vicky. It intitled by myself, because I think this name is very cute. So u’d better call me Vicky during the life.
Nice entry, Vicky! So you're not too fast and not too slow?
Does MaoMao mean anything? It sounds like a cat (meow)!
Maybe,LOL!~ Actually I don't know yet.
MaoMao just means cute, something like that. But many people, like u said, named a cat this name!~

My grandfather gave me this name.In Chinese, qian means pretty, maybe I'm a girl, my grandfather just wants me to have a nice looking. But in China a lot of people have the same name as me, which always bother me.Maybe these two letters are common and simple. If I have a chance , I will choose a three-letters' name , which is more uniqie.
Henry,
So your name means "Bright East?" Is that like--bright sun which rises in the east?
Ivy, how do you pronounce Qian? Can you spell it out phonetically for me? So your name means pretty or beauty? I think that's appropriate for you!
Hi everyone my family name is çınar (Cinar). It means the plane-tree in English. My giving name is Berk which means the strong and solid in Turkish. My mother gave me that name because she wants a strong boy. I like my name because it is not a common name in my country.
Yeah, the pronunciation of "qian" is similar to "chian", I know it's hard for you to say my Chinaese name.:)
My Korean name is Bo-bin Chun. Chun is my family name. Bo-bin means shining precious. My mother gave it to me. In Korea, my name is unusual, so everybody remembers my name well.
Berk,
What is the plane-tree? Do you mean a plain tree, like any tree?
I had a Turkish student named Pinar. She said it means pine tree. So if she were your sister, she'd be Pinar Cinar, which means tree tree?
Viola,
What a beautiful name you have! Shining precious, like a diamond.
Vladimir ("Vlad" - to have or to possess, "mir"- the World or the Peace(in the my case) (in Russian language words the World and the Peace are written by the same one word "мир")). So I'm peacemaker (it's correct meaning). How it say now by convention - peace-keeping forces :DD LOL
Vladimir,
So either you possess the world or you possess peace? It would be great if you could possess WORLD PEACE and then share it!
My name is Fahd. Actually it's a new name, and it has been only for 40 years. And Fahd means literally, a cheetah. But it also mean's powerful. My Mom was the one who gave this name, and she named me as the King of Saudi Arabia. So i like my name and I am enjoying it.
Ms Holly
I possess the Peace :-))
My Chinese name is "謝宏毅". 謝is my last name and 宏毅 is my first name. 宏 means "huge amount or size". And in my family, all of the family members who are in the same generation with me use this Chinese character in our giving name. And 毅 means willpower or patience. So my parents probably wish that I can become a person wiht a lot of patience.
my name is Mehemmed Talal, it's like two-in-one Arabic names. First part is Mehemmed which is an old libyan name of the profit Mohammed. And the second part is Talal (my mother named me Talal, and I had been trying to get the answer from here for ages, but it seems that she doesn't know what Talal means, but last week Poul told me that Talal means rain?????)
Eason,
Your name seems fitting. You seem to have a lot of patience.
Fahd,
what did they call cheetahs before they invented your name?
Talal,
In Hebrew, which is related to Arabic, tal means "dew," which means the first rain in the morning. Al (in Hebrew) is like Allah. So my friend in Israel named her girl Tallel, which means Dew from G-d. Maybe your name means the same.
"Holly" is a kind of plant. Because I'm Jewish, I also have a Hebrew name. My Hebrew name is Chaya, which means "life." This is a variation on the name Chava, who was Eve in the Bible. My grandmother used to call me by my Hebrew name. Since she died, nobody calls me that anymore. I like to think of myself as someone who is "full of life."
My given name is Karla and my middle name is Gisell. I was named Karla because my younger uncle is called Carlos. Also, my mother read the book Gone With The Wind when she was pregnant. Then, she gave me a name similar to EsCARLAta O'Hara, who is the the protagonist in that novel.
On the other hand, she selected Gisell after she saw some names suggested in a magazine.
I like both names. In my case, in my country, my name has no meaning. So, I searched and I found information about my name in this link: http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/0/Karla/1
I think you can see interesting statistics related to your names in this web page.

My Arabic name isهنـاء فتحي خليل) سليمان)Hana F.Kkaleil Solaeman.
Solaeman is my family name and it is a memorable name for the profit Solaeman(peace upon him) . Hana is my giving name,my grandmother named me in hope that, as a first baby I will bring the happiness to my family.so my name means; a source of happiness in Arabic. After me ,my family get five boys and my grandmom was very happy.I like my name ,(I'm the person who always must work to make the others happy even he has his own sadness),that make me feel good.My best friends and my two sisters call me (هني )which sounds as (Honey )in English and I love it so much.
My Chinese name is 戴佩(Dai Pei). Dai is my family name. I know that the prononciation of it just like"die". But the meaning is totally different!! As a family name, "戴" has no special meaning. And my father tole me this family name came of Shandong Province, which is in north part of China and near Japan, even though my hometown is in the south part of China. However, it also can be a verb which means wear. My first name is given by my grandfather. "佩" has two meanings. First, it means jade, a kind of beautiful and glossy stone. My family hoped I had a good looking. Furthermore, the other meaning is to be respected. My grandfather wanted me to be successful when I grew up and be well respected in the certain field.
Hana (Honey), you wrote:
"I'm the person who always must work to make the others happy even he has his own sadness),that make me feel good."
I suppose this is the job of every mother (to keep everybody else happy while we work work work!). I don't know if this makes me feel good, however!
I think that your name is very appropriate for you. Despite your troubles, you always have a beautiful smile on your face. You seem to be a truly happy woman, and this is part of your beauty.
How many siblings do you have, by the way?
Hello everyone!
My name is Yulia, Latin version is Julia. It pronounced like Yoo-lee-yah. It is an origin Russian female name and, fortunately for me, it is not very common. It looks like this Юлия in Russian. Originally, Julia is a feminine form of the name Julius. A lot of people in ancient Rome called their daughters Julia because it meant as if they were born in Julius Cesar’s family. Nowadays, nobody uses this name because of this reason, I guess. The real meaning of my name is youthful or Jove’s child. This name is rather old as I know. Even Shakespeare used its Latin relative in his poems. In addition, my family name is Kutsenkova or Куценкова. It’s also not a common name, but it has some different versions that are also you can hear. It doesn’t have any exact meaning. So, this is my own little story =)
my Vietnamese name is NGUYEN NHU QUYNH arranged in an order of last name, middle name and first name. being different from American, in Vietnam, last name is ordered before first name. My mother is the first person naming it but my father is the last one completing. my name means a yellow follow which only blooms at night and shrivels in the morning. although i love my name, i also have another nickname as Angel. many people laugh at my name, but i think this is also one way for them to remember it... i like it too.
